I've previous written up the Find Your Fate, FASA and Decide Your Destiny Doctor Who game books. These are two Twelfth Doctor choose-your-own-adventure books, both published in 2016. I'm not aware of any more of this type of book being produced since.

This is one of those Who novels that could have made a good TV episode - indeed, it possibly did, with the central theme of children's nightmares becoming reality used twice that I can remember in New Who (Fear Her and Night Terrors). I'm getting to the end of the Torchwood books; this one has all the narrative problems of a book set between series 2 and Children of Earth - massive alien menace threatening to destroy the world starting with Cardiff, serious threat to Ianto's life, both of which we recover from effectively with a giant reset button. If you can swallow the completely implausible geological setup for this story - a desert planet with an ice core (or at least a permafrost mantle) - it's rather a good tale of the politics of a citadel society under stress, as the monsters arise both from the icy depths and from the elders' own children; it's rather effective as a body-horror story ( Read more... )

Another of the double Doctor Who books published earlier this year, two 200-page novels bolted together. Baxendale's Heart of Stone is set in an English farmhouse where things start turning to moon rock, and the Doctor has to put things right - reminded me of that much better YA novel where moon rock starts animating the exhibits in the New York ( Read more... )

One of the first run of Torchwood novels, which I am just now getting into (just in time for Miracle Day). A fairly standard monster-of-the-week story, the monster in this case being an alien which poses as a lake creature and infects male humans with its offspring. I thought this a particularly good Eighth Doctor story, with our hero and Sam ending up on a grand artifact of planetary engineering and falling in both with human military factions and the local very alien beings (themselves exploited by the humans) while facing 'orrible danger from radiation. A nicely constructed novel of the Tenth Doctor and Martha, taking them to a contemporary English village where there is Something Narsty in the well. A good set of local characters filling out a fairly standard alien menace story; I wasn't completely convinced by the engineering aspects of the secret tunnel, but prepared to forgive it for overall
